How to Self Tan Your Face

Has anyone else done a fake tanning session at home, only to find it washes off their face pretty much straight away and they are left with a ghost face / orange chest look? Fake tan usually lasts on the body a lot longer but, because we are always applying different products to our faces and washing it, it disappears from your face quite quickly. But there are a few products I like to use to help prep my face for fake tan as well as applying and maintaining it.

1. Preparation
Just like painting, it's important to have a smooth canvas to act as a base for fake tan. The best thing to do is exfoliate beforehand - I like to use a face scrub or peeling solution like the Murad Intensive C Peel. For a quick fix, you can use exfoliating pads like the Nip&Fab Glycolic Fix Pads or Murad Resurfacing Peel.

After cleansing and exfoliating the face is it important to leave it dry afterwards and not apply any serums or moisturiser, as these will act as a barrier and cause fake tan to slip off!

2. Application
Now it's time to apply the self tan. You can use pretty much any fake tan for your body on your face too - personally I like to go for slightly lighter formulations so that my pores don't get clogged and the colour isn't too much on my skin. At the moment I am loving Skinny Tan Tan & Tone Oil which is a hydrating self tanning oil that is a light golden colour than can be built up. I just spritz some onto a tanning mitt then swipe it round my face and blend. I then go round with a cotton wool pad and remove any excess around my eyebrows and under my eyes so these don't get too dark.

3. Maintenance

And of course the key to any long lasting tan is how well you look after it. To prolong my face colour I use a gradual tanner to build up a tan as it starts to fade. You can turn any facial moisturiser into a gradual tanner by mixing in a couple of drops Vita Liberata Self Tanning Anti Age Serum. You can also build up a gradual tan while you sleep by using James Read Sleep Mask Tan in place of your usual night cream and wake up with glowing skin.

If you're applying makeup I also love Vita Liberata Trystal Minerals Bronzing Powder. This is a loose bronzing powder that looks completely natural and also has a tiny hint of self tanner so it builds up a tan underneath. It comes in two different shades (Sunkissed and Bronze) and comes with a bronzing brush. It is completely kind to the skin as it is mineral-based and it reacts to your moisturiser or foundation to subtly tan the skin.
