Books To Help You Smash 2017

I don't want to dwell on negativity too much but, let's be honest, 2016 was terrible. Which is why 2017 is all about the year of inspiration, working hard and looking after myself. This year I am focusing on number one and every year I set myself a New Year's Resolution to try and read more books. Each night I set aside some time before bed to relax and drift off with a good read, so while I'm feeling motivated and all about accomplishing goals I thought I'd take a look at some of the books I'll be reading to help me along my way...

The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*** and Get Your Sh*t Together - Sarah Knight

I saw pictures of the 'The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F***' doing the rounds a lot on Instagram over Christmas. If you are stressed out and fed up of pleasing everyone else before yourself, then it's time to stop giving a f***. This book explains how to get rid of unwanted obligations and guilt and spend your time (and f***s) on people and things that make you happy instead.

Christmas edition published by Quercus in November 2016, £12.99.

Following the success of The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F***, Get Your Sh*t Together is Sarah Knight's second book, published earlier this month, After the joys of mental decluttering, this book takes you one step further by helping you to identify your goals, organise a work-life balance, save money or get out of the door for happy hour every day.

Published by Quercus in January 2017, £12.99.

This Book Will Make You Successful and This Book Will Make You Fearless - Jo Usmar

Fear is definitely something that holds me back in life; whether that's not having the confidence to speak up and say what I'm thinking at work, worrying about doing something wrong or being too scared to push my boundaries. 'This Book Will Make You Fearless' is a concise, straight-forward guide to battling fears, allowing you to take control of your life so you can make changes and accept that you can cope with whatever life throws at you. Anxiety is one of the biggest mental health challenges of our time. Rather than a 'coping with' book, this is an inspiring, modern take on 'feel fear and do it anyway'. Chapters include: dealing with physical anxiety, negotiating obstacles, stopping self-sabotage, building confidence and feeling more powerful.

Success means different things to different people, but there are essential key skills and knowledge to help you achieve your goals. Whether it is progressing in your career, getting a pay rise, setting up your own business or even negotiating dinner arrangements. 'This Book Will Make You Successful' is a guide to getting what you want in life. This book covers everything from networking, conflict resolution, stress management, productivity and being more persuasive, using interviews with professionals across all fields of expertise. Chapters include: goal-setting exercises, anti-procrastination techniques, persuasion strategies, negotiation tips, creativity boosters, work-life balance and managing difficult conversations.

Both published January 2016, £5.99 each. Other books in the series include: This Book Will Make You Happy, Calm, Confident, Sleep, Feel Beautiful, Mindful.

Beyond The Bathroom Scale, The 12 Week Health, Fitness & Wellness Planner - Karen Oliver

Like pretty much everyone on this planet, I set myself a New Year's Resolution to eat healthier and do more exercise. I also set myself a resolution to relax more and take time out of my day to switch off. Luckily, this book helps me do both. Beyond the Bathroom Scale is more than just a food or exercise log, it is a health and wellness planner. While it's all well and good tracking our food and exercise on our smartphones, do we really look at our eating and fitness habits? We're so used to automatically syncing our wearables and tapping apps on the move but don't actually take time to think about what we're doing and spot the patterns in our daily life. This book takes things back to basics by using good old pen and paper to write down your actions and goals. It allows you to combine the accuracy of smartphone apps (such as a fitness tracker to count steps and food log to count calories) with the space to reflect on what you've done throughout the day.

For me, my favourite thing is that there is no guilt with this. It's not like the book says to you 'You didn't burn enough calories today you lazy b***h!' but instead it allows you to set yourself a weekly plan, log your daily details and then asks you what went well today and what you can improve on. There is space to plan your meals and exercise for the week ahead and record your personal bests and small victories. My favourite part is the daily wellness section which asks if you took time to relax that day and what made you smile - which is very important for a healthy lifestyle!

Published October 2016 and available from Amazon, £14.99. Sign up for free as a 'Beyond the Bathroom Scale' member to benefit from 20% off when ordering directly from CreateSpace. Visit www.beyondthebathroomscale.co.uk for further details.
