Like pretty much everyone on this planet, I set myself a New Year's Resolution to eat healthier and do more exercise. I also set myself a resolution to relax more and take time out of my day to switch off. Luckily, this book helps me do both. Beyond the Bathroom Scale is more than just a food or exercise log, it is a health and wellness planner. While it's all well and good tracking our food and exercise on our smartphones, do we really look at our eating and fitness habits? We're so used to automatically syncing our wearables and tapping apps on the move but don't actually take time to think about what we're doing and spot the patterns in our daily life. This book takes things back to basics by using good old pen and paper to write down your actions and goals. It allows you to combine the accuracy of smartphone apps (such as a fitness tracker to count steps and food log to count calories) with the space to reflect on what you've done throughout the day.
For me, my favourite thing is that there is no guilt with this. It's not like the book says to you 'You didn't burn enough calories today you lazy b***h!' but instead it allows you to set yourself a weekly plan, log your daily details and then asks you what went well today and what you can improve on. There is space to plan your meals and exercise for the week ahead and record your personal bests and small victories. My favourite part is the daily wellness section which asks if you took time to relax that day and what made you smile - which is very important for a healthy lifestyle!
