Health Supplements: Yay or Nay?

A topic I always find interesting in the beauty world is health supplements and, quite frankly, do they work? Walk into any pharmacy, supermarket or health shop and you'll find supplements for everything and anything - from topping up your daily vitamins to assisting weight loss, beating stress, and helping to clear skin. So one of the biggest questions is do they actually work and do we need them?

While I'm no health expert I thought it would be insightful to share my thoughts and opinions. Most research and health websites will advise "food first" and "plate over pill". This essentially means we should use our diets to get the vitamins and nutrients that we need. Supplements can plug nutrition gaps in our diet but they cannot replace the nutrients and benefits of foods and they are not a one way ticket to good health. The nutrients and, more importantly, fibre found in food cannot be solely duplicated into one pill.

However, when the good we are eating doesn't contain some essential minerals or vitamins - such as calcium, potassium or Vitamin B / Vitamin D, a supplement can help to boost nutritional benefits. Supplements are good way of maintaining health, alongside a balanced lifestyle, and can help prevent deficiencies and health conditions.

Urban Decay Naked Heat Palette

Urban Decay Naked Heat Palette

Urban Decay Naked Heat Palette

It's the most talked about launch in the blogging world for a long time, but does Urban Decay's new Naked Heat palette live up to the hype? With reddy, copper and bronze tones throughout, this is something completely different from Urban Decay and it strays away from the usual 'Naked' palettes - made up of nude and everyday shades.

Having light blonde hair and fair skin I wasn't sure if this palette would be right for me as I didn't think the shades would suit me. I'm not even usually one to wear eyeshadow regularly so while everyone else was losing it over this palette and swatching away, I decided for some time that I was going to stay and not bother it. But being the typical blogger I am and letting curiosity take over I eventually caved and got the palette for myself!

Cypriot Beauty from Kypwell

Often when I go on holiday I find myself admiring the local women's skin and wondering what their secrets are, realising I probably need to take my skincare back to basics and let nature do its job. Of course our lifestyles can impact on the way we look and feel, and I have recently discovered Kypwell - a Cypriot beauty brand that inspires natural and healthy lifestyles among women.

Of course if you are lucky enough to live somewhere as beautiful as Cyprus you'd probably be looking radiant as you'll have the sun beaming down on you every days, but it is actually the Cypriot way of living that Kypwell's co-founders try to encourage; spending quality time with family and friends, enjoying time outdoors, and appreciating therapeutic natural herbs. This natural wellbeing helps to promote balance and encourage people to live their lives to the fullest.

Fun Summer Drinks Recipes

I have to admit I'm extremely lazing when it comes to getting my daily intake of fruit and vegetables, although I haven't yet figured out what my excuse is...whether it's living in a shared house with a very small fridge and not having much space for fresh fruit or having a very busy lifestyle and fruit going off too quickly after I buy it! Luckily I've found a solution to up the amount of fruit I'm having and that's by making smoothies and juices.

My Top Coral Lipsticks

While I normally stick to just one shade of lipstick (pink) summer is always a time where I get a little bit more adventurous with my makeup and start experimenting with different colours. After returning from my recent holiday with a slight tan - hooray - I've opted for different shades of flattering coral to enhance my tan. Coral is a great all round shade as it suits pretty much everyone. Here are some of my top coral lipsticks I've been loving...

Summer Hair Saviours

I have to admit I'm pretty lazy when it comes to looking after my hair; I always run some hair oil through the ends after washing it but that's about as far as it goes. However, there's something about summer that always makes me step my game up a bit and start using more products to style my haie and try to keep my locks in tip top condition.

Why I'm Swapping Facial Moisturiser for SPF

If I was to speak to you about sun care three years ago I would openly admit I was one of those girls who would lie out in the sun all day without any SPF on their face in the hopes of getting a tan. Who am I kidding? Here I am at the age of 25, still pale as ever, accepting the fact my pasty skin doesn't tan at all, and instead welcoming some lovely wrinkles to my forehead and eyes.

Now, I'm not saying these first signs of wrinkles are purely down to sun exposure but also a number of factors including an unhealthy diet, not getting enough sleep and pollution (the joys of living in London). All of us reach for the SPF when the sun makes an appearance but our faces need looking after all year round and we are still at risk of damaging our skin on even the cloudiest of days.

So in my quest to hold on to my youth (we can hope) I am doing my best to protect my skin by applying eye cream each day, I'm currently loving Kiehl's, and swapping my regular face moisturiser for SPF as a base underneath makeup.

Some of the products I've been loving recently include Murad City Skin Age Defense SPF 50, this is particularly great if you're using it as an everyday SPF rather than one specifically for holidays / on the beach as it is ultra lightweight and is more of a mineral sunscreen. It is also protects from the main causes of environmental damage (pollution, UVA, UVB, blue light from devices, infrared) to prevent skin ageing. Perfect for city goers! Clinique Mineral Sunscreen Fluid is very similar and it's handy small bottle size means it's perfect for taking on the go. This actually feels more like a moisturiser than an SPF and is invisible on the skin. Plus it's oil free so doesn't clog pores.

I'm also loving Frezyderm Color Velvelt Sun Screen as this is a tinted sun screen, meaning it can double up as your foundation. I was surprised at how velvety the texture of this is and was a little concerned that the 'One shade suits all' shade wouldn't suit me but it seemed to adapt to my skin tone and cover up imperfections perfectly.

Korres is always a favourite brand of mine and I rely on them for natural skincare products that are packed full of skin-loving, protective ingredients. Their Red Grape suncare range is relatively new and is an anti-ageing range so their face SPF can be used for daily facial care while providing antispot action. Sensai Silky Bronze Protective Cream for Face feels like a treat on the skin as it is so silky and creamy. Again this tackles skin ageing so it is a big thumbs up from me.

For quick and easy hydration and protection on the go I love La Roche Posay's facial mist. Once I've applied my SPF in the morning I keep this with me to top up skin protection throughout the day and refresh my skin - perfect for hot and sticky days.

Do you use an SPF in your daily routine or is it just for holidays? What are your favourite facial SPFs?

What I'm Packing for my Holiday

This week I am heading off to sunny Portugal on Friday for a week in Lagos and Lisbon! Usually I am ultra-prepared when it comes to holidays and would have bought my new clothes and toiletries in advance, but I've ended up leaving everything until the last minute!

Luckily I'v pretty much got everything I need ready to go and last year when I went to Cuba I did a little 'What I'm packing' post which did really well so I thought I'd do the same this year and show you what I'm taking along with me for my holiday.

Murad Rapid Resurfacing Peel

Murad Rapid Resurfacing Peel

When most people go away on holiday their skincare routine usually goes out the window and it’s a case of chucking a pack of baby wipes into a suitcase and hoping for the best. Personally I try to stick to a good skincare routine as much as possible while travelling - although this can sometimes be tricky with the hand luggage liquid restrictions!

To get around this I have a few travelling essentials including coconut oil (great for removing makeup and moisturising - plus it technically counts as a solid and I’ve never been called up on it) and sheet masks to revive dehydrated skin after a flight. I’ve also recently discovered the new Rapid Resurfacing Peel wipes from Murad and I am obsessed!

Lipstick Queen Frog Prince Lipstick

Lipstick Queen Frog Prince Lipstick

Lipstick Queen Frog Prince Lipstick

A magical green lipstick? You may be confused for Elphaba's understudy when you pull this bright Emerald lipstick out of your handbag but, don't be fooled, it actually transforms into a rosy shade of pink upon application of your lips. This little delight from Lipstick Queen reacts with the warmth and PH of your lips to adapt to a shade of pink to suit you - meaning everyone has their own, individual shade!

Rodial Snake Oxygenating Bubble Mask

Rodial Snake Oxygenating Bubble Mask

Rodial Snake Oxygenating Bubble Mask

When it comes to cleansing, innovative face masks have been taken to a whole new level recently and we have become obsessed with peeling away our pores and covering our faces in liquid gold or snail juice. Now there is an even stranger beauty regime taking over the internet; bubble face masks.

The trend hails from the Asian beauty market (of course) and, essentially, the face mask bubbles up over your face in a similar way to a foaming cleanser. They claim to moisturise skin while cleansing thanks to all the oxygenating bubbles.

Recently my Facebook and Instagram has been awash with videos of people trying them out and, always being fascinated by the Asian beauty market, I just had to give one a go! Luckily I  was excited to see that UK Brand Rodial has also released their own versions of these masks - so I decided to go for these as I knew I was in trusty hands and quite frankly don’t know where to start with Asian brands!

Summer Favourites from Korres

Korres Summer

When I think of holidays I think of the smells of the sea, fresh ingredients and being out in the great outdoors. Luckily Korres have bottled all that up into their range of natural, Greek products. For those who haven't heard of or tried Korres before, they focus solely on natural ingredients and develop skincare products based on two fundamental points; to develop environmentally friendly formulations and to project the benefits of Greek herbs.

I've tried a number of their different products and all of them have worked wonders for my skin. Another plus side is that all their body products smell INCREDIBLE and remind me of summer holidays. So with the nice weather finally making an appearance, here are a few Korres products I've been using religiously...

Non-Beauty Things I'm Loving This Week

The last few weeks I've taken my foot off the gas a little with my blog as I've been busy getting out and about, going to fun events and discovering more of London. It's always refreshing to take some time away and explore something new so I feel like I've learnt of new things and discovered some exciting brands and activities along the way! While my obsession with beauty products still remains strong, here are a few things I've been loving outside of the beauty world recently...

Holy Moly Dips

A while ago I went to Taste of London food festival and while I was there I discovered quite possibly the most delicious guacamole ever. It was by the brand new Holy Moly Dips, who create 100% natural avocado dips. As well as creating delicious guacamole, in both original and spicy, they are the first brand to create a pot of pure, ready-made smashed avocado - making a brunches a breeze and eliminating the dreaded 'Avocado Hand' injury!

I am fully obsessed with these dips and am stocked up. If you want to get some for yourself you can buy them from Waitrose, Whole Foods, or online at Ocado.

Pukka Tea

I'm guilty of drinking around five cups of tea filled to the brim with sugar each day, so I'm trying to swap my regular tea for herbal teas. I recently went along to an event with Pukka at Whole Foods to discover their range of teas and was surprised by just how many different varieties of tea they have! My new daily favourites are Clean Greens, a refreshing, lemony green tea, Cleanse, a fennel tea for unhappy teas, and even Turmeric tea - which I've been told is bursting with antioxidants and is great for skin. Pukka also do an adorable travel tin to keep individual tea bags in when you're out and about.

Love Bug Probiotics

I've never really used probiotics in the past but recently a lot of people have been telling me about the benefits of them. Things like stress, tiredness and hormones and cause havoc with my digestion and I'm often left feeling bloated and sluggish. LoveBug's 'Here's the Skinny' probiotic is great for digestive health by restoring the balance between good and bad bacteria in the gut.

This one is a bit of a random one but I recently decided I wanted to learn calligraphy! I'm very much a 'do-er' and like to keep myself busy so I booked on to a calligraphy workshop through Obby. The workshop took place in a beautiful coffee shop in Notting Hill called Pearl and Groove and was led by the lovely Alice Gabb. We learnt the basics of modern calligraphy and took home a pen and paper as well as all the essentials we need so we can keep practicing at home. While I've been pretty busy recently so haven't managed to keep it up as much as I like, it's always nice to set aside some time in the evenings to sit at the table and have a quiet hour or two to myself practicing!

Exploring London

I've lived in London around a year-and-a-half now but there is still so much of the city I need to see and every day there is something new to discover! I recently got the book Insider London which is full of shop, pub and bar recommendations as well as the classic tourist spots so this is helping me to compile my 'London bucket list'. Summer is by far my favourite time in London as there are popup and rooftop bars galore! Last week I went to the Pimms rooftop bar on top of Selfridges with some friends from work to sip on our favourite summer drink and chill out while watching Wimbledon!

New Rimmel Insta Selfie Collection

I use the odd product from Rimmel but I've never been as excited for an entire collection launching as when their new #InstaSelfie range dropped through my letter box! I've been stuck in a bit of a makeup rut recently and haven't bothered trying out anything new or experimenting with contouring and colour correcting, so when I started rifling through the products I couldn't wait to spend some time giving everything a go and trying out different looks.

This range is all about helping you to create the perfect selife by getting a picture perfect look. It contains everything you need for correcting, concealing, contouring and illuminating.

Sleek Distorted Dreams Collection

After the launch of Sleek’s Solstice palette I didn’t think their highlighting game could get any stronger. Then they launched their iridescent Distorted Dreams collection for Summer 2017 and I think everyone’s inner glitter obsession did a little whirl and a squeal of excitement.

The highlighting palette is made up of five shimmery pastel shades in a mixture of cream and powder textures to illuminate eyelids, cheeks and lips. Most excitingly of all the original Matte Me lip shades have been given a makeover with a metallic edge - and just look at how shimmery they are!

Beauty Rocks Tokyo Love Box

I've had a fascination with Japanese beauty products from as long as I can remember, so when the lovely Jamie from Beauty Rocks Blog created her own beauty box based on her travels in Japan, I couldn't wait to take a peek!

Each product has been hand picked by Jamie and her subscription box has an Around The World Theme, focusing on a different different country that is special to her each month. Some of the products in the box I've heard of before but others were completely new to me so I couldn't wait to dive in...

I am a huge fan of Korres; their body ranges are to die for and I am always stocked up on delicious-smelling shower gels and body lotions. I’ve recently started branching into their skincare ranges after being so impressed with the Greek brand and one of their latest launches, the Castanea Arcadia range, certainly doesn’t disappoint.
